The TAKE IT DOWN Act, explained for creators

In May 2025 the United States signed the TAKE IT DOWN Act into law, and from May 2026 the big platforms have to follow it. If you create content, this law is on your side. Here is what it actually says, in plain English.

The law is about intimate images shared without consent. Covered platforms — the big social and content sites — must run a clear request process, and once they get a valid request, they have 48 hours to take the content down. Not 'review it'. Take it down.

You do not have to be the copyright owner to use it — being the person in the image is enough. And a request can be sent by someone you authorize to act for you, which is how services like ours file for clients.

The law is enforced by the FTC, with real penalties for platforms that ignore it. That is why big platforms now move fast on these requests: it is cheaper for them to comply than to argue.

What it does not do: it does not reach the offshore pirate sites that ignore every law. For those, the working tools are still copyright takedowns and removal from Google search. The smart play is to use both systems at once.

If someone is sharing your content without consent, you have more rights today than creators have ever had. Use them — or let us use them for you.
